Cary Fire Protection District is currently establishing a Firefighter/Paramedic hiring list.

The Cary Fire Protection District is located in southern McHenry County, 45 miles northwest of Chicago and covers an 18.5 square mile area which incorporates the communities of Cary, Trout Valley, Oakwood Hills, unincorporated McHenry County and Lake County. In 2022, CFPD responded

to 2,543 calls for service from two fire stations. The department is currently staffed daily with (10) firefighters that consist of full-time, permanent part-time & part-time personnel that work a 12 or 24-hour shift. The approximate population of the fire district is 35,000 residents year-round.

 

 

 

Full-Time Firefighter / Paramedic

 

The Cary Fire Protection District is seeking highly energetic, strongly motivated individuals for the position of Full-Time Firefighter / Paramedic. Candidates shall possess a combination of knowledge, experience, skills and abilities suited to meet the exceptional needs of the

Cary Fire Protection District. Additionally, each candidate shall exhibit integrity, loyalty, professionalism, and a commitment for continuous

learning and a lead by example attitude.

This position involves working both assigned shifts and responding off-duty, as required. This position is appointed by the Board of Trustees

and is considered a career, full time position.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Between the ages of 21 and 35 as of application deadline of February 1, 2023. Age 35 may be waived if candidate meets the requirements as identified in Illinois Compiled Statutes, 70 ILCS 705/16.06b as of February 1, 2023

  • Legal resident of the United States of America

  • High School diploma or an equivalent GED

  • Possess valid state of Illinois Driver’s License

  • Residence shall be within a 10-mile radius from Fire Station 1

  • Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) Firefighter II or Basic Operations Firefighter as of February 1, 2023

  • OSFM Fire Apparatus Engineer (FAE) required within (1) year of hire

  • Be capable of reading, speaking and writing in the English language

  • Meet knowledge, health and physical qualifications established by the District

  • Successfully complete all components of hiring process

  • Pass a background investigation, pre-employment medical exam and drug test

  • Exhibit good moral character, temperate personal habits and show evidence of an industrious work ethic

At time of conditional offer, candidate shall be required to possess:

  • Illinois Department of Public Health EMT-Paramedic license

  • Successful completion of Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) including optional ladder climb within one (1) year preceding date of conditional offer

 

This test will establish a list that will be valid for two (2) years

 

 

Salary and Benefits

Starting salary starts at Step 1: $68,000 with a 6-year step program that progresses to $88,249.84.

 

Benefits: Full benefit package including Health, Dental and Vision insurance w/ $25,000 stipend towards employee cost, Paid Vacation and Sick days, Holiday Pay, Life Insurance, Deferred Compensation, Optional supplemental Insurance (Cancer, Accidental, etc.), Annual Medical Evaluations, and an inclusion in the Illinois Firefighters Pension Plan (Article 4) Tier II.

 

Testing Process

Completed applications and all requested documentation must be submitted to Cary Fire Protection District Headquarters Station by 2:00 p.m. on February 1, 2023.

 

Mailed, faxed, emailed, incomplete, or late applications will not be considered.

 

The testing process will begin with a MANDATORY candidate orientation session to be held at 9:00 a.m. on 02/25/2023 at Cary Fire Protection District Fire Station 1, 400 Cary-Algonquin Road, Cary, followed by a written test on 02/25/2023 at 10:00 a.m. in the same location.
